AI2ES has joined the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Consortium, led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Members of the consortium are part of a collaborative effort to establish new science-based and empirically backed guidelines and standards for AI measurement and policy in order to promote the “safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence”(Executive Order of Oct. 30, 2023). As a contributor to the consortium’s mission, AI2ES brings its expertise in developing trustworthy AI for atmospheric and ocean science by unifying the domains of artificial intelligence, environmental science, and risk communication. AI2ES seeks to continue fostering AI safety, advancing responsible AI practices, and driving positive social impact through safe, effective, and rigorously evaluated AI models.

AI2ES and other members of the consortium will help ready the U.S. to address the capabilities of the next generation of AI models or systems, from frontier models to new applications and approaches, with appropriate risk management strategies. NIST does not evaluate commercial products under this Consortium and does not endorse any product or service used.
