Project Highlights
From impacts to local communities to advancing AI in industry, explore our impacts and research contributions.
Water Temperature Prediction for Protecting Endangered Sea Life
In the Laguna Madre, the longest hypersaline lagoon in the United States, the passage of cold fronts can lower air temperature by more than 10°C in less than 24 hours. Some of these cold-water events result in large fish kills and sea turtle cold stunning. We are providing critical information through our AI water temperature prediction model to industrial decision makers and wildlife volunteers.
Winter Road Weather: Decision Making
Severe winter weather poses significant challenges for roadway safety. We have developed an AI product that provides real-time, automated identification and prediction of road weather conditions for the New York Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Our solution will deliver real-time decision-support tools to help NYSDOT rapidly assess and respond to hazardous winter road conditions.

Hail Nowcasting in Partnership with Industry
In a collaboration with government researchers at NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory and private industry researchers at Vaisala, NSF AI2ES created an AI approach to nowcasting hail and convective initiation. The model is currently being operationalized and refined into a product at Vaisala.
