About

Pioneering AI and Earth Systems Science

The vision of NSF AI2ES is to create trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for Earth system (ES) and environmental science users that will revolutionize our understanding and prediction of high-impact atmospheric and ocean science phenomena and create new educational pathways to strengthen the AI and environmental science workforce.

NSF Investment

Launched in 2020, the NSF-led National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes program consists of 27 AI institutes that connect over 500 funded and collaborative institutions across the U.S. and around the world.

The AI institutes focus on different aspects of AI research critical importance to U.S. competitiveness, food security, public safety, education, ethics, and myriad other targets. The institutes collaborate with industry and government to advance the frontiers of AI as well as a range of science and engineering disciplines and societal sectors that stand to benefit from AI innovation.

NSF AI2ES is an inaugural NSF AI Institute.

“Recognizing the critical role of AI, NSF is investing in collaborative research and education hubs, such as [NSF AI2ES], anchored at the University of Oklahoma, which will bring together academia, industry and government to unearth profound discoveries and develop new capabilities advancing American competitiveness for decades to come,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan.
